Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy describes what Justice Lens, operated by Specta LLC ("we," "us," or "our"), collects when you use the site, why, and how to exercise your rights. Justice Lens is a publication: reading it requires no account and collects nothing beyond ordinary hosting logs.

1. What we collect

Hosting logs. Our hosting provider records each request: the requested page, timestamp, response status, your IP address, and browser type. We use these to keep the site running and to see which pages are read. We do not run advertising trackers or session-recording tools.

Account information (optional). If you create an account, authentication is handled by Clerk, which collects your email address. We store the account identifier, the email address, the date and version of the Terms of Service you accepted, and, for people who subscribed to a plan before plans were discontinued, a plan label synced from Stripe. We keep no record of which pages an account reads. Accounts are not required for any part of the site.

Email brief subscriptions. If you subscribe to a monthly neighborhood brief, we store your email address, the area you chose, the last month we sent you, and the unsubscribe token in each email, until you unsubscribe.

What we do not collect. Nothing you read is recorded against you, the site has no search or query that reaches our servers, and we do not collect payment details: donations are made on a page hosted by Stripe, and no card information reaches our servers.

We do not sell personal information and do not share it with third parties except the providers below, each acting on our behalf.

The site sets no analytics or advertising cookies. If you sign in, Clerk uses cookies and local storage to maintain your session. You can clear or block them in your browser; doing so signs you out.

5. Retention

Hosting logs are retained by our provider for a limited period and then discarded. Account information is kept while the account exists and deleted within 30 days of an account deletion request. Brief-subscription records are deactivated immediately when you unsubscribe and deleted thereafter. Aggregate usage counts that contain no personal data may be kept indefinitely.

6. Security

We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect the information we hold. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

7. Children

The site is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

8. Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, or delete your personal information. Every brief email carries a one-click unsubscribe link. For account deletion or any other request, write to [email protected]; we respond to verified requests within 30 days.

9. Public records

The analyses on this site are computed from public government records (MPD stops, arrests, reported incidents, and moving violations via DC Open Data, and U.S. Census population estimates). Those records are published by their agencies, are not collected from users of this site, and are analyzed only in aggregate.

10. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy and will change the "Last updated" date above when we do. Material changes will be noted on the site.
